When you stand to preach does it feel like you are trying to pull a boxcar? Have you noticed that the congregation isn’t with you
until your sermon is almost over? Does it feel ice-cold when you know it should be fiery hot? Preacher the purposes of a music ministry are not only to exalt the Lord and encourage the people, but it should also inspire you. The music should make you want to preach! If the house seems cold it could be the fire in the fireplace has gone out!
Suppose today you came up on a house that was burning. What would be your initial response? Calm? Quiet? Composed? Most likely you wouldn’t nonchalantly dial 911 and whisper that there is a fire. If you have any emotion at all it would most likely be a sense of urgency. Today we approach music in the church much like the lethargic cartoon named droopy, dragging it on and on until finally the Pastor stands before the congregation that has now been lulled asleep. Not anywhere in scripture does it say for us to lullaby the praises of our God! Notice how David closes out Psalms 59,
But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.
A people who have been delivered as we have should have every reason to sing out! Now I am not talking about emotionalism. However I fear we have lost our emotion in the ranks of fundamentalism. The children of Israel showed great emotion when they looked back across the Red Sea and saw that last chariot wheel sink to the bottom. David showed great emotion when the ark of God made its way through the streets of Jerusalem. Don’t think that applies to us? Go over and read in Revelation 5 when the Lamb of God stands up and opens the sealed book. What does all of Heaven do? They break out into a song! That’s every Independent Baptist, Southern Baptist, Methodist, and any other man and woman who has been saved by the Blood of the Lamb singing, shouting, and praising God…with a loud voice!!!
Preacher, I want to introduce an opportunity to you so that you can
Put the Fire Back Into The Choir!!
We will be traveling to a number of churches this year holding Fire In The Choir Clinics. If you would like more information on holding a clinic for your music department at your church, please call me or email me for more information.
We look forward to hearing from you and working together to make your music department the best it can be!
